The goal of "The Family Table" is for families to spend time together. The calendar was created to give families a starting place. It is designed to remind families to have a meal or activity together each week. Activities and dates are flexible and can be adjusted according to an individual families needs. So remember "Sit, eat and talk at the Family Table."

If a King is laid down the player has three chances, Queen- two chances, Jack- one chance.  If the player doesn't lay a face card down, the player before him/her gets the deck of cards, big or small.  If a double ( 2 on top of a 2, 3 on top of 3, etc.) is laid down any player that is playing the game can slap it, as if you were playing Slap-Jack.  Keep repeating these steps until one person has the whole deck of cards.  You win the game by having all of the cards. There was a time in our history when families ate most of their meals together. However, as the children get older and family members become involved in school, community and church activities family dinners often become a things of the past. Some families report that big holiday meals are the only time their families eat together. Here are some ideas for fun family meals.

Build your own Pizza

Buy or make individual crusts.

Have sauce, a variety of toppings and cheese in bowls at the table.

Each persons designs an individual pizza.

Fajitas

Cook your favorite fajita meat in the crock pot.

Set out all the toppings in bowls on the table.

Put flour tortillas in a warmer on the table.

Each person fixes their own fajitas

Mexican Pile On

Place the following items in bowls and crock pots and each person makes their own plate.

Fritoes

Rice

Meat sauce

Cheese

Lettuce

Tomatoes

Onions

Picante sauce

Guacamole

Sour cream

Pecans

Coconut

Hawaiian Pile on

Place the following items in bowls on the table and each person makes their own plate.

Chow Mein Noodles

Rice

Chicken sauce

Cheese

Tomatoes

Celery

Bell Pepper

Onions

Pineapple

Coconut

Almonds

Soy sauce

Homestyle Subways

Buy your favorite time of sandwich roll

Have a variety of lunch meats, cheeses vegetables and toppings.

Each person makes their own subway sandwich

Hot Dogs and More

Fire up the barbeque grill and let each person roast their own hot dog.

Have all the toppings and each person fixes their own.

Top it off with toasted marshmallows and make S'mores

These are a few of my favorite things

Sometimes it makes for a strange meal but let everyone in the family select their favorite food and have a buffet style meal. If children in the family are older each person can make their own favorite dish.

Foreign Food Night

Each month select a different country and have a meal that consists of foods popular in that country

  • Mexican

  • Italian

  • Chinese

  • Greek

  • German

  • Japanese

  • Thai

Or select foods popular in different regions of the United States-here are some examples

  • Philly Cheesesteaks

  • New York Style Hot Dogs

  • Chicago Beef Dip Sandwiches

  • Jambalaya

  • Cajun Food

  • Southern Style Fried Chicken or Fish

Family Time at Breakfast

Holiday are a favorite time for Family Breakfast. Things that can be partially prepared ahead of time give Mom a break. Another choice is for Dad or the kids to take over breakfast preparation. Examples of do ahead breakfasts include

  • breakfast casseroles

  • cinnamon rolls

  • muffins

  • breakfast pizza

 Birthday Dinner

On each person's birthday they select their favorite meal top off the meal with their favorite type of cake and ice cream.

 Stuffed Potatoes

Bake Potatoes and have a variety of toppings. Each person tops their potato with desired toppings. Suggested toppings:

butter

sour cream

chives

chili

cheese

broccoli

chicken

celery

picante sauce

guacamole

chili/cheese dip

 Build a Better Burger

Cook Hamburgers out on the grill. One different idea is to make stuff hamburgers. Each family members puts their desired stuffing such as cheese or mushrooms between two patties and seals the edges. The burgers are cooked on the grill or under the broiler. Eat in the back yard.

Many of these recipes can be found in the "Friona Schools Feed Hungry Children" Cookbook. For prices and information on this cookbook contact gmurdock@frionaisd.com or pallen@frionaisd.com

Ranching Heritage Center

The heart of the Ranching Heritage Center is a 14 acre site where over 30 historic ranch structures have been relocated and restored to their original condition. These buildings show the evolution of ranching from the early trail driver's one room cabin (c. 1838) to a prosperous rancher's stylish Victorian house at the turn of the century (1909). Linecamp, dugout, bunkhouse, blacksmith shop, cowchip house, schoolhouse, corrals, shipping pens, windmills, chuckwagons, coal burning locomotive: these diverse structures depict the development of ranching from the drover, open and closed range, to modern management of the cattle business. Many of the structures originate from famous ranches that played decisive roles in the development of modern ranching such as the Matador, 6666, XIT, and King ranches.

For information about the Center, please call the National Ranching Heritage Center Office at (806)742-0498 or 742-0500, or write the National Ranching Heritage Center, P O Box 43200, Lubbock, Texas 79409-3200
